Case StudiesEmergency Flood Response in Bardiya District, Nepal Emergency: In August 2006, heavy monsoon rains leading to floods and landslides affected 16 districts in western Nepal resulting in 45 deaths, the displacement of 973 families, and the destruction of property. Water borne diseases such as diarrhea and dysentery emerged in some areas. In total, about 68,992 people were affected across the region. The floods were particularly devastating to the people of Bardiya District, one of the poorest districts in Nepal, where almost half the population (29,743 people) was affected and 554 families were displaced. Response: A Better World Fund's $3,000 grant helped enable IRC to provide free emergency medical care to over 1,300 people in Bardiya District who were affected by the devastating floods. IRC deployed a mobile medical team immediately to respond to the critical health needs of the affected population. Working closely with the Nepal Red Cross Society and the Department of Health, IRC coordinated mobile medical camps in the three Village District Councils of: Mohamadpur; Rajapur; and Sorhawa.
