ABWF 2006 Grant Recipients

SEEDS OF PEACE

provides leadership, communication, and negotiation skills for youth who come from conflict regions around the world to live and learn together in an annual summer camp in Maine

participants include Arabs and Israelis, youth from former warring countries in the Balkans as well as from India, Pakistan, and Afghanistan, and youth from the United States

campers return home to advance the ongoing work of reconciliation and coexistence in their respective communities

 

HUMAN RIGHTS WATCH

works in more than 70 countries around the world to prevent discrimination, uphold political freedom, protect people from inhumane conduct during wartime, and investigate human rights violations and hold abusers accountable

conducts fact-finding investigations into human rights abuses in all regions of the world and publishes findings to generate local and international media coverage

 

PRO MUJER

provides thousands of Latin America's poorest and most undereducated women - in Bolivia, Mexico, Nicaragua, Peru, and Argentina - with the means to build livelihoods for themselves and futures for their families through small loans of $50 to $600 that enable the women to operate or start tiny businesses

also provides ongoing training before, during, and after each loan to help ensure the success of each business, also provides healthcare support to help maintain the health of the women and their families

 

MESAB

improves access to quality health care for historically disadvantaged South Africans by providing financial aid, training and education for the development of South African black health care professionals in South Africa

also works to improve the quality of life for South Africans with HIV/AIDS by strengthening community-based training to provide caregivers with enhanced knowledge and skills to better meet their patients' needs

 

TEACH FOR AMERICA

recruits a competitively selected national teaching corps annually of more than 1,000 outstanding, highly motivated and talented recent college graduates, from all academic areas, cultural backgrounds, and geographic regions

these recruits make a two-year commitment to teach in rural and urban public schools located in over 20 low-income American communities

they are dedicated to the ongoing expansion of educational opportunities for our nation's most disadvantaged students
